As we celebrate Black Philanthropy Month this August, Black Alphabet NFP is proud to reflect on our journey and our ongoing commitment to advancing the well-being and visibility of Black LGBTQ+ communities. Founded in 2013 from a conversation about the underrepresentation of Black LGBTQ+ voices in media, Black Alphabet quickly grew into a movement, beginning with the Black Alphabet Film Festival (BAFF)—Chicago’s first Black LGBTQ+ film festival.
Over the years, Black Alphabet has evolved into more than just a film festival. We have become a vital force in advocating for social equity, using media and the arts to tell stories that matter, educate the public, and create spaces where Black LGBTQ+ voices can thrive. Through our various programs, including our Artist-In-Residence initiative, wellness retreats, and art therapy sessions, we empower individuals to explore and express their identities while addressing critical issues like mental health and community healing.
Black Philanthropy Month, a global celebration of Black giving, is particularly significant for us this year. This month is not only about celebrating our history but also about recognizing the power of collective action. For Black Alphabet, philanthropy is deeply rooted in our mission to uplift and sustain our communities. It’s about creating a legacy that honors our past while paving the way for future generations of Black LGBTQ+ artists and activists.
This year, in alignment with Black Philanthropy Month’s theme of “Afro-Futures of Giving,” we are focusing on two major initiatives:
First, we are participating in the Chicago AIDS Walk/Run in partnership with the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. This event is crucial for raising awareness and funds to support those living with and vulnerable to HIV, a cause that directly impacts our community. We are calling on our supporters to join us in this effort, whether by walking with us, donating, or spreading the word.
Second, we are intensifying our efforts to increase our individual donor base. Financial contributions are essential for us to continue supporting local artists through our Collective Artist-In-Residence program, which provides critical resources for Black LGBTQ+ creatives. By investing in these artists, we are investing in the future of Black art and culture, ensuring that our stories continue to be told with authenticity and power.
Black Philanthropy Month is a time to celebrate the rich tradition of Black-led giving and to recognize the incredible impact it has on communities like ours. It’s also a reminder that our work is far from finished. We invite you to join us in our mission—whether by participating in our programs, donating now to support our fundraising efforts, or simply spreading the word about the vital work we do.
This month, let’s honor the legacy of Black philanthropy and the founder of this movement, Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland, by taking action. Together, we can continue to build a world where Black LGBTQ+ voices are not only heard but celebrated.
Black Alphabet is a Chicago-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to promote social equity awareness and education in all aspects of life for the Black LGBTQ+/SGL community through the use of media and the arts. All donations are tax-deductible.
